Guess what we did last night?

This is our very small master bathroom that is sorely in need of some updates.  So last night, my husband got a wild hair, and we started in.

Before:

At some point someone installed a light bar below this wooden thing, where the original bathroom lights were.  In the picture below are the original lights, up inside the 'cabinet.'

Next is a close-up of the horrible installation job of these original lights.  They are not even mounted tight to the wall.   The other good news (can you hear my sarcasm) is that we have the same configuration in the main bathroom which is on the other side of the wall.  There are three more of these lights, and the same type of cabinet configuration, on the other side.  (I bet the other ones are installed way better).

After:
Here's the cabinet removed . . .  all of a sudden this bathroom feels lighter and bigger.  (Now looking at the pictures it strikes me as funny that we didn't even take the towels down off the bars before we started in on this  . . .)

Our plan is to replace all these light fixures with one new fixture (which I picked out at Lowe's last night).  So we have some sheet rock patching, and some serious re-wiring to do.  We also are going to paint, replace the counter top, and hopefully the floor. Last night, we also looked at recessed medicine cabinets to replace the cabinet we took down.  It looks like we can put one of these in  because the vent pipe for the sink does not run behind the existing mirror.  The vanity cabinet is in good shape, and so is the sink, faucet and toilet so we will be keeping those.  Plus, we are on the 'budget remodel' plan so we can't just be bustin' up everything.

The shower in this bathroom (which is to the left of the sink) desperately needs to be redone also, but we are probably going to wait to tackle that HUGE project until next year.

Stay tuned for updates on our progress . . .
