We let the chickens out in the yard for a bit today, and they found a flower bed which has some wonderful loose dirt right now. Chickens LOVE to take dust baths. This is bizarre chicken behavior that freaked us out the first time we saw it (we thought they were dying or something!). They will roll around in the dirt like this sometimes for 20 or 30 minutes. They do it to help clean their feathers, or to cool off in hot weather. This behavior is one of the reasons we don't leave our chickens loose in our yard all the time. Dust baths can be very damaging to your flower beds!
