This is the view of our house, from the street, at 7:30 a.m. this morning.
8:00 a.m. The city workers show up with their big trucks and about 5 guys.
The view of our house at about 11:45 a.m.
And the pile of wood.
So here's the story: Did you see that big power box in front of our house? A few weeks ago, the city had to replace that box. In the process, they had to cut many large roots to that huge tree. So they asked us if we would like to have it taken out, as now it is going to die anyways. Yes! This tree is way too huge, and has already cracked our driveway, and the leaf clean up in the fall is immense (there is another tree of the same kind on the other side of the driveway, although it is not quite as large). So they came today with their big trucks, and cut down the tree.
My husband wanted to keep the wood, so now he has the very large job of cutting it all into firewood.
A landscape company is supposed to be coming to grind the root (which will be humongous I am sure) and to plant another tree. Although, we would like to have a much smaller tree in that spot, or none at all.
Now I just need to talk the neighbor into moving that basketball hoop (that no one uses!). I would also like to take out that section of fence and replace it with a small hedge. It would soften the look of that spot, but still provide a barrier from the neighbor's yard.

That was a HUGE tree! What kind was it?
It was a sweetgum tree. We have another one on the other side of the driveway, although it is not nearly as big.
There was also one in our backyard when we moved in, but it cracked a big branch off in a windstorm so we cut it down.
They become terribly brittle when they are big and we have had problems with this tree dropping branches, etc.
did the city pay for it? if so, SCORE!!
